IntroductionThere many occasions where you will need to change from a QuickTime file format (.mov or .qt file-name extensions) to an AVI (.avi file-name extension) – for example if making a Video CD or using VirtualDub mod – both of which will accept AVIs but not QuickTime file formats. To do this you will need the basic RAD Game Tools utility and a codec (if you will be producing compressed AVI, which we recommend). You can get RAD Game Tools free from the RAD website:
- http://www.radgametools.com/default.htm#Bink for RAD Video Tools - http://www.xvidmovies.com/codec/ for the Xvid Codec for Windows
The ProcessDownload these and install. Once installed, run 'RAD Video Tools', you will then be presented with the following dialogue box:
Simply select the QuickTime file that you wish to convert. Then click on the 'Convert a File' button. This will then open a new dialogue box:
Simply click the 'Output Type' button. This will then open a list of possible types. Select ‘AVI’ and then click the 'Convert' button. This will open a new status window, which, in turn, opens another dialogue box to ask you to select the compression you wish to use from a drop-down list. We suggest Xvid, but you can experiment with other types (or indeed none!).
Once this has been done, a new box will open informing you of the ongoing status of the conversion until it has been completed and your new file is ready – in the same directory as the original you have converted.
